Summer Infant Sleek and Secure Handheld Color Video Monitor, Grey Review

This is our first video monitor, which we got for use with our second child after using a Graco Vibe audio-only monitor with our first child. Having a video monitor is really handy, it does an excellent job of keeping us out of the baby’s room. As a concerned parent, it’s really easy to want to go in and make sure a young baby is OK, which very often ends up disturbing the baby. Instead, I can grab this monitor and see that my little girl is ok.

Having not used other video monitors, it’s hard to make a comparative review, but I did do a fair bit of research comparing other models with this one, there’s a few things that made this model an easy choice:
- Small, pocket-size monitor
- Support for up-to four cameras
- Secure audio/video feed

As another reviewer noted, the mounting options are a bit limited, you can either mount it on the wall with a screw w/ wall anchor or sit it on a shelf or another level surface. I chose to mount my two cameras on the wall. Although I chose not to use the cheapy wall anchor included and used a nicer one from the local hardware store. If you turn the volume all the way down on the monitor, you can hold the monitor in one hand and figure out camera placement with the other hand. Like was suggested in the manual, I put a teddy-bear where baby will sleep in the crib. It helps make it easy to figure out placement of the camera. One thing I liked about the cameras and monitor is that they come with pretty long cables. Too many electronics come with shorty cables, not this one.

One thing I was only moderately impressed with was the video quality, the video is a little grainy, washed-out and has an almost slow-mo feel since it’s not a high frame-rate, maybe 5 frames per second. That said, the most important feature for a baby video monitor, I think the night-vision works fairly well. I’m able to see that my baby is sleeping, moving or not moving. I mounted the camera 3-4 feet from the baby and if I look closely, I can usually see if her eyes are open or closed, even with the night vision.

We mounted the other camera in my older daughter’s room, allowing us to visually check on either child with a push of a button, which is nothing short of awesome. It was easy to add too, press a few buttons, turn on the second camera and voila! You can even use the scan feature which swaps between the monitors every 8 seconds. We have white noise going in each child’s room, so when the camera swaps between room, the audio swaps too. The one thing to be aware of is that the audio swap can be distracting if you’re trying to sleep. For that reason, we still use the Graco audio monitor in one room and the video monitor with audio in the other.

I’ve only had this monitor a couple weeks, so I can’t comment on the battery lifetime, but the battery seems to last throughout the day of normal use, charging overnight.

I’d probably have given this 4.5 stars if it was possible, but chose to go with 5 to offset some of the other reviews which seem too low due to abnormal breakage or something that doesn’t necessarily directly relate to the product features/quality.

Expected more for the price – Robin10707 – Charlotte, NC
I would say that I expected a better monitor for the price. The night vision is horrible. If you’re interested in one of these video monitors, look at the Summer Best View monitor. It rocks!!

One of the Best.. could use some improvements – 2eXceL – California
We bought this system for our first baby. The system works fairly well and we have no major complaints, overall one of the best on the market for the features. It is a bit pricey and could use better wireless Technology like DECT 6.0 that top Cordless Phones use, this would improve Range and Interference. Although in our case, mostly in-home use we don’t have problems with Range or interference. But with the technology this system uses some people could have interference from Mircowaves, or Internet Routers, etc.
The main features we like is ability to talk to the baby, clear sound, night-vision, and portability of hand-held unit. You can also add more Cameras to the system, and the Hand-held Monitor allows you to cycle through all the Cameras, or display all Four at the same time.

Pros: Good Video quality, even in Night Vision mode, Clear sound, Talk-back, Microphone, Hand-held Monitor with clip on. The Monitor also has a Color bar to indicate Sound level.

Cons: When the Monitor is disconnected from AC Power, it runs on the rechargeable battery and the screen goes into power save mode after about 15 seconds, so you have to keep pressing the On button or wait to hear your baby to get the Video back on. This is kinda annoying, but you could just keep it plugged in. Price. No DECT 6.0 Wireless technology.

Other than that, remember to remove all tape and packaging from the Camera and the Receiver to ensure clear Sound.

Works Great for Us – Ben – Nebraska
Anyone who has read reviews of numerous monitors knows that some people love a particular model while others hate it. As for us, and this model, we love it. If you are thinking about getting a monitor, I think that probably the main thing to take away is that the reviews of monitors seem to vary based on the needs of the parents. Therefore, I’ll describe our needs before talking about the monitor. We have a smaller house, and our daughter was 4 months before we broke down and bought a monitor. At first we didn’t think we would need one, but eventually we wanted more freedom to work outside or on a different floor of our house while she was sleeping. We don’t have any need (or desire) to hear every breath, cough, or grunt, or to see every movement she makes. We simply wanted a monitor that was reliable and that would alert us when she woke up from her nap and started to cry. The video feature was more of a bonus peace of mind feature to us. If we were away for a long time and don’t here her cry, we can simply turn on the video and see for ourselves that she is still asleep. That’s all that we need.

The picture is clear enough to see if her eyes are open, or whether her legs are kicking. And because we use it in low light, it is essentially black and white night vision. But, it is still plenty clear to see what you need to see. The sound quality is good; we can easily hear her when she cries. The monitor is the size of a cell phone, it is light, and the belt clip is sturdy. We have no interference, and have both wireless phones and an Apple router broadcasting in our home. Battery life is very good. We only use it for naps and it lasts multiple days in between charges. That said, our only complaint would be that the range is somewhat limited… although we only have it give the out-of-range beeping when outside. However, reading other reviews, it appears that this is more of a technology limitation with digital video, than a design flaw. All the other digital video monitors I researched had the same comments on range being limited.

Overall, I think this monitor is definitely worth your time to purchase. No monitor will may every parent happy, but this one seems to do a better than average job.
